Today kicked off the first session in our “Afterschool Music Club!” program! This program was designed to combine crafting, upcycling, music theory, and literacy skills. Each session we will be creating different instruments out of upcycled materials.
For this first session, we created shakers out of upcycled plastic water bottles. To start we listened to different types of music that have a heavy shaker presence (Latin, African). We then practiced playing some pre-made professional shakers. This is where I worked in the music theory. We talked about the different sounds that shakers can make and how they make sounds.
After the lesson we were able to create our own shakers. To fill the water bottles and give the shakers their specific sound, I put out a variety of objects to choose from including:
- Dried beans
- Dried mini letter/number pasta shapes
- Assorted beads
- Old scrabble letter pieces
Once the children picked their shaker “filling”, they were able to decorate them using colored pipe cleaners, paper streamers, and colored feathers. This was a lot of fun and we are looking forward to our next meeting!
